Kuala Lumpur, 26 August 2026 – GWM Malaysia is showcasing its growing local manufacturing capabilities and future mobility technologies at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026, highlighting the brand’s commitment to local assembly, regional exports and the development of advanced new-energy solutions.
Organised by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), GATE 2026 brings together government agencies, automotive manufacturers, technology providers, suppliers and industry stakeholders to explore technological advancements and collaboration opportunities across Malaysia’s automotive and manufacturing ecosystem.
For GWM Malaysia, the event provides a platform to connect its current investments in products, technology, local assembly and regional exports with emerging technologies that could shape the future of mobility.
Since establishing its presence in Malaysia in 2022, GWM has continued to strengthen its local operations through product expansion, technology introductions and localisation initiatives.
During the first half of 2026, GWM Malaysia delivered 3,166 vehicles, representing a 42.4% year-on-year increase and placing the brand among Malaysia’s Top 11 automotive brands. Key contributors include the GWM HAVAL H6 HEV and GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV.
“Over the past four years, we have built a stronger foundation for GWM in Malaysia, supported by growing customer acceptance and confidence in our products and technologies. As we enter our next phase of growth, Malaysia is becoming increasingly important not only as a market, but also as part of our wider ASEAN strategy,” said Stan Li Hao, Managing Director, Commercial Operations, GWM Malaysia.
“Through local assembly, regional opportunities and stronger partnerships, our focus is on creating sustainable, long-term growth while contributing to the development of Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem.”
Three Models Showcase GWM’s Local Assembly Strategy
At GATE 2026, GWM is displaying three models that represent both its current locally assembled portfolio and its future CKD plans.
Leading the showcase is the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, GWM’s locally assembled luxury MPV. The model is also exported from Malaysia to Thailand, demonstrating the country’s growing role within GWM’s regional manufacturing and export network.
In Malaysia, the WEY G9 is also the No.1-selling luxury MPV among officially distributed OEM brands, according to GWM Malaysia.
Joining the WEY G9 are two models planned for local assembly:
- GWM ORA 5 HEV – combining distinctive styling and intelligent technology with hybrid efficiency.
- GWM HAVAL H7 Hi4 PHEV – bringing performance, intelligent four-wheel-drive capability and electrified efficiency to GWM’s SUV lineup.
Together, the three vehicles represent one current CKD model and two upcoming locally assembled models, reflecting GWM’s strategy of expanding its Malaysian assembly portfolio across multiple vehicle categories and powertrains.
“GATE is an important platform for the industry to exchange ideas, showcase capabilities and explore opportunities for collaboration. For GWM, our presence reflects both the progress we are making in Malaysia today and the possibilities we are exploring for tomorrow,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer, GWM Malaysia.
“With our current CKD model, two upcoming models planned for local assembly, and Malaysia serving as an export base for the WEY G9 to Thailand, we are strengthening our commitment to the local automotive and supplier ecosystem.”
Showcasing Hi2, Hi4 and Hydrogen Technology
Beyond its vehicle lineup, GWM is also using GATE 2026 to showcase its proprietary Hi2 and Hi4 technologies.
The technologies demonstrate GWM’s approach to balancing efficiency, performance, intelligence and capability across different driving requirements.
Together, Hi2 and Hi4 form part of GWM’s multi-powertrain strategy, allowing the company to develop electrified solutions for different vehicle applications, markets and customer needs.
GWM is also highlighting hydrogen technologies developed by FTXT, offering industry stakeholders an insight into the wider GWM Group’s development of alternative energy solutions and their potential applications across mobility and energy.
The technology showcase is intended to encourage greater industry awareness and discussion surrounding hydrogen and other emerging new-energy technologies, particularly their potential role in Malaysia’s longer-term mobility ambitions.
Building Today While Preparing for Tomorrow
GWM’s presence at GATE 2026 highlights two key priorities for its Malaysian operations: strengthening its existing localisation and regionalisation efforts while exploring the technologies and partnerships that could support the next phase of mobility development.
As the brand continues expanding in Malaysia, GWM says it remains focused on growing its product portfolio, strengthening local assembly capabilities, improving customer experience and aftersales support, and building stronger partnerships locally and regionally.
Through continued collaboration with government agencies, industry stakeholders, suppliers and technology partners, GWM aims to contribute to the development of Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem while exploring opportunities for deeper localisation, regional integration and future technology collaboration.
