KUALA LUMPUR, 28 October 2026 – Electric vehicle (EV) charging in Malaysia could become significantly faster as BYD Malaysia explores the introduction of its Flash Charging technology through a new partnership with Gentari, a clean energy solutions company wholly owned by PETRONAS.
The collaboration follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both companies at BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The agreement will see the two parties explore opportunities to deploy BYD Flash Charging infrastructure in Malaysia, supporting the country’s growing EV ecosystem and efforts to expand high-power charging facilities nationwide.
Designed to work with vehicles equipped with BYD’s Second Generation Blade Battery, the technology aims to significantly reduce charging times, potentially bringing the experience closer to the convenience of conventional petrol refuelling.
Charging from 10% to 97% in Just Nine Minutes

One of the first Malaysian models to support BYD Flash Charging is the recently launched DENZA Z9GT.
Equipped with a 122.49 kWh battery and a 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture, the electric grand tourer can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and reach 97% in just nine minutes when using the compatible charging technology.
The system is designed to deliver its fastest charging performance with vehicles featuring BYD’s Second Generation Blade Battery.
Existing BYD models can also use the new charging infrastructure, although their maximum charging speeds will depend on individual vehicle charging capabilities.
According to Jacob Ma, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, the company is working towards making Flash Charging available to Malaysian customers, with the technology expected to improve convenience as EV adoption continues to grow.
Gentari Partnership to Expand Charging Locations
The initial deployment will focus on selected DENZA luxury showrooms, giving owners of compatible vehicles early access to the new charging technology.
Beyond the initial rollout, BYD Malaysia and Gentari will explore suitable locations and supporting infrastructure, including PETRONAS stations and major intercity routes connecting key population centres.
Both companies will also consider introducing Flash Charging facilities at selected highway rest and service areas, potentially providing EV owners with more convenient charging options during longer journeys.
The collaboration also includes opportunities to develop local capabilities through technician training and upskilling to support the expansion of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.
DENZA Z9GT Gets a New Fjord Green Exterior Option

Alongside the charging infrastructure announcement, DENZA Malaysia has introduced a new exterior colour option for its luxury electric grand tourer, the DENZA Z9GT.
Called Fjord Green, the new colour joins the existing Rime Gold and Obsidian Black options and is now available for viewing at DENZA showrooms nationwide.
Since its local launch, more than 100 DENZA Z9GT units have been delivered to Malaysian customers, with additional batches arriving to meet demand.
Priced at RM358,800, the Z9GT is built on BYD’s e3 Platform and produces up to 850 kW (1,156 PS). The electric grand tourer can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and comes with specialised driving functions such as Compass Turn and Crab Walk.
The introduction of BYD Flash Charging infrastructure is also expected to unlock faster charging capabilities for the compatible Z9GT.
Interior Choices and Showroom Availability

The DENZA Z9GT’s interior combinations vary depending on the selected exterior colour.
Customers choosing Rime Gold can opt for a Perg Beige interior or an all-black cabin featuring suede seats with yellow stitching.
Obsidian Black is available with Red Velvet, Perg Beige or the all-black suede interior, while Fjord Green offers all three interior combinations.
The DENZA Z9GT is currently available at eight locations in Malaysia:
- DENZA Balakong
- DENZA Glenmarie
- DENZA KLCC
- DENZA KL North
- DENZA Old Klang Road
- DENZA Melaka
- DENZA Penang
- DENZA Skudai
With BYD Flash Charging being explored for Malaysia, the partnership with Gentari could mark another step towards improving the country’s EV charging infrastructure. If successfully deployed, the technology could offer compatible EV owners shorter charging stops and greater convenience for everyday use and longer-distance travel.
